The question we hear most often, from drivers and shops alike, is some version of: "Does this specific vehicle actually need calibration?"
The honest answer is that it depends on the make, the model, the year, and specifically which repair operation disturbed the sensor. A windshield replacement on one platform may require a short static procedure. The same job on a different platform may require static calibration followed by a highway drive cycle before the system clears.
Anyone who hands you a simple table claiming to cover every manufacturer is oversimplifying something that genuinely varies. What we can offer instead is more useful: the patterns that hold across nearly all manufacturers, and the authoritative place to look up the exact answer for any specific vehicle.
First, the Scale of This
If you're a shop owner still treating calibration as an occasional edge case, the numbers have moved considerably in the last few years.
In 2016, roughly one in four vehicles needed calibration after a windshield replacement. Today it's closer to nine in ten for recent model years (Safelite). On the collision side, industry data entering 2026 showed calibration required on about 65% of repairs — a threshold the industry hadn't expected to reach until the end of the year (Caliber Collision).
Automatic emergency braking is now standard equipment on over 95% of vehicles sold in the US from model year 2023 onward. The direction is one-way: more sensors, on more vehicles, requiring calibration after more types of repair.
The Four Patterns That Hold Almost Everywhere
Across manufacturers, four repair categories reliably trigger calibration requirements. If a job falls into one of these, assume calibration is required and verify — rather than assuming it isn't.
1. Windshield Replacement
The single most common trigger. The forward-facing camera mounts to the glass or a bracket bonded to it. Replacement changes the seated position by millimeters, and differences in glass curvature, thickness, and refraction alter the optical path. Nearly all major automakers require recalibration after windshield replacement on camera-equipped vehicles.
2. Bumper or Fascia Work
Front and rear radar modules and ultrasonic sensors are commonly mounted behind or inside bumper covers. Removal and reinstallation disturbs their aim, which means recalibration is typically required even when the sensor itself was never replaced.
3. Alignment, Suspension, and Ride Height Changes
The one that catches shops off guard most often. Ride height changes of only a few millimeters can shift the pitch angle of cameras and radar modules enough to affect detection range. Strut and spring replacement, four-wheel alignment, lift or lowering kits, and air suspension work all fall here.
4. Sensor or Module Replacement
Replacing a camera, radar unit, or the control module they report to generally requires calibration or at minimum a scan-tool initialization. Some platforms also require a reset after extended battery disconnection.
Most shops associate calibration with collision repair and glass work. But routine suspension and alignment services change the exact geometry ADAS sensors were calibrated against. A vehicle sitting nose-up tilts its forward radar upward, reducing its ability to detect nearby objects — and the vehicle may set no fault code at all.
Many OEM calibration procedures now require technicians to verify ride height before beginning calibration, precisely because of this relationship.
The Three Calibration Types
When you call a calibration shop, you'll hear these terms. Knowing which one a job needs affects turnaround time and what facilities are required.
Performed indoors with the vehicle parked on a level surface and a manufacturer-specified target positioned at an exact distance. Requires a controlled environment — proper lighting, a certified level floor, and adequate clearance. This is why static calibration cannot be reliably done in a parking lot or driveway.
Requires driving the vehicle on a road with clear lane markings at a specified speed for a specified distance. The system calibrates using real-world data. Weather, traffic, and road marking quality all affect whether the procedure completes.
Some events require only a scan-tool command — an initialization, angular offset reset, or module write. No target, no drive cycle. This typically applies where a module was replaced but the physical sensor position was never disturbed.
Many vehicles require a combination — commonly static first, then a dynamic drive cycle to confirm.
Which combination applies is one of the specifics that genuinely varies by platform.
Not all generic OBD-II scanners can send manufacturer-specific ADAS initialization commands. Dealer-level tools or approved aftermarket equivalents are required to complete the write sequence. A shop running a generic scanner will confirm a connection but cannot complete the calibration.
Where the Real Answer Lives
For a vehicle-specific answer, the authoritative resource is I-CAR's OEM Calibration Requirements Search, available through the I-CAR Repairability Technical Support (RTS) Portal.
It covers 2016-and-newer vehicles and is organized by make, model, and repair event. For each safety system, it shows which cameras and sensors are involved, where they're located, what calibrations are required, whether scan tools or special equipment are needed, and whether the system will set a diagnostic trouble code or illuminate a warning lamp if it detects a problem during pre- or post-repair scanning (I-CAR RTS).
Two caveats worth knowing. The database does not yet contain every production vehicle sold in the US, and I-CAR notes it should be checked regularly as updates are posted. And for some manufacturers — BMW among them — the results display differently from other makes, so the format isn't perfectly uniform.

What Varies Most Between Manufacturers
If the patterns above are the reliable part, here's where the genuine variation sits — the questions worth checking rather than assuming.
- Whether alignment triggers calibration, and for which sensors. Requirements differ between cameras and radar on the same vehicle, and between manufacturers on the same repair.
- Static versus dynamic versus both. European platforms more often require both. But this is a tendency, not a rule, and it has shifted as platforms update.
- Model year cutoffs within the same nameplate. A vehicle from one model year may have different requirements than the same model two years later, because the ADAS package changed.
- Trim-level equipment. Two vehicles that look identical may carry different sensor packages depending on options fitted.
- Environmental tolerances for static calibration. Some systems are considerably stricter about floor level, lighting, and clearance than others.
The Practical Rule
For drivers: if your vehicle has any ADAS feature and it's been through glass work, collision repair, alignment, or suspension service, ask whether calibration was performed and request the documentation. The systems can fail silently — a miscalibrated camera often produces no warning light at all, which means the absence of a dashboard alert tells you nothing.
For shops: verify before you quote, not after the customer asks. The cost of a lookup or a phone call is zero. The cost of delivering a vehicle with an uncalibrated safety system — and no documentation showing you checked — is a different order of magnitude entirely.
